Medicine:
By being in the rainforest humans have been able to discover many different medicines. Nearly 120 prescription medications today originate from plants in the tropical rainforest and ⅔ of these drugs are known to be used for cancer fighting properties.
Not only are the drugs used to fight cancer, they are key in fighting malaria, heart disease, hypertension, bronchitis, diabetes, arthritis, and other medications. Human exploration of the rainforest has developed important medical progress for humanity.
The tropical rainforest’s diverse climate has allowed for an extremely diverse biome, the diversity has allowed for it to be called “Nature’s medicine cabinet.” With the effective natural treatments that it has to cure many human illnesses and diseases. Human exploration of the rainforest has unlocked an abundant source of medicine. Agriculture: Research has shown that harvesting the renewable and sustainable resources already present in rainforests is worth more than the industries currently replacing rainforest habitat. By replacing rainforest vegetation with cattle operations an approximate profit of $60 per acre is generated for the owner.
Harvesting habitat for a lumber industry will generate approximately $400 per acre. However, using the natural nuts, fruits, seeds and edible plants already present in the rainforest, it has been found that tropical rainforests, as they occur naturally are worth more than the industries they are being replaced with. This research proves that naturally occurring rainforests can provide many of the worlds needs as they stand.
